Our History

Beth Tzedec Congregation has a rich history rooted in community and tradition. Founded in 1986 through the merger of two congregations—Beth Israel and Shaarey Tzedec—Beth Tzedec embodies the strength and unity of Calgary’s Jewish community.

Beth Israel, established in 1935 as a Conservative synagogue, opened its original building in 1960. Meanwhile, Shaarey Tzedec, a modern Orthodox synagogue with mixed seating, had been serving congregants from its downtown-adjacent location since 1959. By the 1980s, both synagogues faced challenges: Beth Israel’s sanctuary was too small for its growing congregation, and Shaarey Tzedec’s location was increasingly distant from Calgary’s expanding Jewish population centers.

The merger brought together these two vibrant communities, creating a new Conservative synagogue on Beth Israel’s site. Construction of the new building began in 1987, blending the legacies of both congregations. By the early 1990s, Beth Tzedec Congregation was officially dedicated—a testament to the vision, collaboration, and enduring spirit of Calgary’s Jewish community.
